As the site of the race is located 180km from Kigali Airport in Gisenyi the main city of Rubavu district in Rwanda’s Western Province. The city features a resort on the shores of Lake Kivu which is one of the African Great Lakes. It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and is in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. Gisenyi represent the ideal spot for water sport. Rwanda has a temperate tropical highland climate a temperature range between 12 °C (54 °F) and 27 °C (81 °F) throughout the year, the average in Gisenyi is 20° (68°F)
