The ITU World Triathlon Madrid, which twists and turns through beautiful Casa de Campo Park, always elicits great shots. This year, the event was the final opportunity to clench a spot at the 2012 London Olympics, meaning race strategy was more important than ever.
This week’s winning photo, another overwhelming favourite, shows the elite women in an aerodynamic “V” formation. With Olympic qualifications on the line, the ladies put their heads down and went to work. While the photo produces a serene sentiment, some of these ladies were under intense pressure to perform.
Here is what ITU photographer Delly Carr had to say about the photo:
“Green is the colour of nature and health. Green is a relaxing colour that is easy on the eye and has a healing power to it. And although in the heat of the sporting battle, it seems that the beautiful archway of Madrid green has had a calming effect on the athlete’s psyche.”
This week’s runner-up photo was Jonathan Brownlee’s seductive finish. Having added his second consecutive WTS title to his resume, Jonathan takes a moment to savor the sweet smell of success.
