The International Triathlon Union today announced that Geel, Belgium will host the 2008 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships on August 10th. Located approximately 50 kilometers east of Antwerp, the city has previously hosted the successful 2004 ITU Duathlon World Championships. Long Distance Duathlon is a gruelling test of endurance consisting of a 20-kilometer run, 80-kilometer bike, and 10-kilometer run. These Championships will feature a $50,000 USD prize purse for elite athletes.
“I feel very confident with the organizing committee in Geel, which hosted one of the best Duathlon World Championships ever,” said Gergely Markus, ITU Event Development Director and Technical Delegate for the triathlon competition at the Beijing Olympic Games.
The event is a natural fit in Belgium, a perennial Duathlon powerhouse with the dominance of the late Duathlon legend Benny Vansteelant who led a 1-2-3-4 Belgian sweep in 2006. Shortly after his tragic death last year, his younger brother Joerie kept the title in the family and will have the opportunity to defend his World Championship at home. The 2007 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships were held in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Catriona Morrison of Great Britain is the reigning women’s champion.
