2006 Triathlon World Champion, Tim Don of Great Britain, won the Tongyeong BG Triathlon World Cup today in South Korea, the 198th world cup in ITU’s history. The fleet-footed Don ran away from the competition over the final stages of the race to claim the fifth world cup win of his career in a time of 1 hour 38 minutes and 14 seconds. In second position, only six seconds behind, Athens Olympic silver medalist Bevan Docherty of New Zealand out-sprinted Germanys Jan Frodeno in a photo finish result. Don continues his push to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games as he shows great form heading into next months final selection race at the Madrid BG Triathlon World Cup, moving to first in the BG Triathlon World Cup rankings.
I always give 100% and I was so pleased to get on the top of the podium, commented the 30-year old Brit known to his friends as The Don.
In total, 50 men dived into Tongyeong harbour and with wetsuit conditions, no significant packs formed over the opening leg. Don kept near the front, showing his improved swimming ability in this all important Olympic year.
Not content to sit idly in the large bike pack of 37, Don frequently pushed the pace through the windy and cool conditions. Unable to break up the group it was quickly on the run where Don would move to the front and never give up that position. Racing off the front the former world champion continued to up the tempo, dropping contender after contender until it was only him at the front.
I saw in the women’s race the run was very technical at both ends and every time they went into a technical bit, they separated in a long line so I decided to get to the front and run at my own pace,” explained Don.
With his patented running style, Don ran a closing 30:25 ten kilometres to claim his first world cup win since 2005. Docherty and Frodeno ran side by side behind the Brit for the entire 10-kilometre leg, leaving the decision to their strong finishing kicks. Today it was the veteran Docherty who managed to squeeze past the German for the silver medal.
Im pretty happy, Ive been training press hard the last few months, and it was the reason for the big DNF in New Plymouth, commented silver medalist Docherty. But in reality this year is all focused on one race and thats in August in Beijing. The Olympic Games is everything, so all my training is orientated around that. You get highs and lows and its good to get one good race out of the way its good for the confidence but I still think theres a long way to go.
Its always a tough one, the first race of the season, replied Frodeno, who has also made his Olympic team for Beijing. Tim [Don] just put out an amazing pace on the run, and I was happy to follow for a while and just hang on there when Bevan [Docherty] pushed. In the end it was really close, but its always great having a sprint finish even if you pull the shorten end of the stick, but a podium in my first racewhat more can you ask for?
In fourth and fifth position were Reto Hug of Switzerland and Rasmus Henning of Denmark, respectively.

The elite men ride through Tongyeong
The men’s medalists (Docherty, Don, Frodeno) strike a pose on the podium
