Long standing ITU elite racing host city Madrid is among the five cities to submit application to hold the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020.
Madrid has been a regular on the ITU world circuit hosting World Cup and World Championship series events annually since 2003. The Spanish capital joins the cities of Istanbul (Turkey), Tokyo (Japan), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar) in submitting their Application Files by the deadline of 15 February 2012.
The files will now be studied by an IOC-appointed working group and a report made to the IOC Executive Board (EB). At its meeting in May in Quebec City, the EB will decide which cities will be accepted as Candidate Cities and proceed to Phase 2 of the IOC’s bid process.
Those accepted into Phase 2 will take part in the Olympic Games Observers’ Programme – London 2012, from 27 July to 12 August 2012.
If they so wish, Applicant Cities may now make their responses public and post them on their respective websites.
The election of the host city will take place on 7 September 2013 at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
