The organizing Comittee of the Madrid ITU Triathlon World Cup is very consciencous about the relationship between sporting events and nature and the sustainable development of the planet. The Federation and the LOC committed to a standard of global practices to ensure that environmental care would be present in every detail of the event. The Madrid World Cup and the Spanish Triathlon Federation undertook two major actions.
Request the ISO 14001 Certification (which is based on very strict global environmental management standards.) A group of Norwegian evaluators were present at the Madrid World Cup in order to quantify an important number of issues, including: noise and pollution of all the engines and vehicles; kgs of waste, usage of specific containers for recycling paper, glass, plastic and organics; cleaning of aid stations, recycling of carpets, reusing of signage, printing on recycled paper and several pages of other requirements.
Join the program “ecoflag” developed by the non-profit international organization Global Sport Alliance. (GSA). The Ecoflag Movement is a global campaign by sport enthusiasts to develop a sustainable society. By flying the Ecoflag at sport events we aim to increase environmental awareness and promote action among spectators and athletes.
GSA Executive director, Tatsuo Okada, gaves to Madrid ITU World Cup Race Director Enrique Quesada, the first Ecoflag obtained by any sporting event in Spain or event within the ITU Family. As we move forward, all ITU events will be encouraged to implement the same environmental programme.
