USA and GBR dominate World Aquathlon

By World Triathlon Admin | 09 Sep, 2005

Current world triathlon champion Sheila Taormina of the USA, tonight added another title to her belt with victory in the 2005 ITU World Aquathlon Championships in Gamagori, Japan.
Carla Moreno (BRA) and Lenka Radova (CZE) won the silver and bronze respectively.
Taormina looked comfortable in the race she was using as a final hitout for Sunday’s Olympic distance world triathlon championships.
In a great night for Great Britain, former world junior champion Tim Don continued his great form, to claim the men’s world aquathlon title ahead of team-mate Richard Stannard. Don has won three World Cups this year and now has his sights set on a strong performance in the ITU world triathlon championships on Sunday.
Paulo Miyashiro won Brazil’s second medal of the night with his third place in the men’s race.
Conditions in this nighttime race were hot and steamy with the air temperature 30 degrees and the water 25 degrees.
In a first for the sport the race was conducted under floodlights with athletes racing a 3.3km run, followed by a 1 km swim and then a 1.6km run.
